Here you’ll find a selection of my work: classes, published poems and prayers, and events.
Crafting a Personal Theology: a Curriculum Guide
This curriculum guide was my capstone project for my Master's of Jewish Education. The impetus for this project was the realization that many young Jews go to college without ever considering their personal beliefs in God. Many don't even realize there are countless ways to believe in God in Judaism. This class teaches alternative theologies inspired by science, feminism, and LGBTQIA+ identities, culminating in a student-led project of designing a unique personal theology.
The First Fifty Years: a Jubilee in Prose and Poetry Honoring Women Rabbis
Rabbi Tovlev was the second out trans student to ever be admitted to HUC-JIR, and the fourth out trans rabbi to be ordained. As one of the "firsts" of his time, Rabbi Tovlev was invited to write about his experience as a trans rabbi. Honoring the trailblazers who came before him, Rabbi Tovlev writes about the importance of taking that first step into the unknown.
Mishkan Ga'avah: Where Pride Dwells
Rabbi Tovlev has three pieces of liturgy published in this groundbreaking collections of LGBTQIA+ Jewish prayers and blessings. His prayer "A Transgender Day of Remembrance Yizkor: For Those Who Died Sanctifying Their Names" has been read in Transgender Day of Remembrance vigils across the country.
Beyond the Binary: Gender Expansiveness in Judaism
A three-session series exploring gender beyond the binary in Judaism. The class covers the six genders in the Talmud, a midrash that provides a gender-expansive view of the creation story, and how feminist and queer theologians have rediscovered these ancient texts and used them to promote progressive Judaism.
Trans Jews Are Here Convening 2
Rabbi Tovlev was the Director of the second Trans Jews Are Here Convening (TJAH) hosted by Congregation Beit Simchat Torah (CBST) in Manhattan, NY. With over 30 workshops, maxed out registration, and hundreds in attendance, the Convening was the largest gathering of trans Jews to date. Entirely online, the Convening had a trans track led by and for trans Jews, and an ally track curated for those not in the trans community. Rabbi Tovlev created the trans track, and worked closely with Rabbi Mike Moskowitz to co-create the ally track.
Prophetic Voices: Renewing and Reimagining Haftarah
Rabbi Tovlev was invited to write an alternative haftarah for Transgender Day of Visibility, which takes place on March 31 every year.
